Scholarships For Arts, Artisans | Rising Kashmir

Artisans have a unique gift to spend their lives filling everything they do with love and attention. Their crafts tell the history of their ancestors and the story of their lives. Besides this, the authorities ensure their craft remains a source of livelihood for them.

Earlier this month, the J&K Administrative Council (AC) revised the education scheme for children of weavers/artisans under the Handicrafts and Handloom department.

The scheme aims at providing scholarships to give financial support to the weavers with regard to the education of their children. Under the revised scheme, scholarships will be provided to eligible children at the rate of Rs 1,500 per year on completion of Class I, Rs 2,000 per year on completion of Class II and the fee fixed by the government for Class XI onwards, including technical / professional education.

Earlier, the benefits were available only to the girl child. Eligible students can apply for scholarships to the assistant director concerned. The scholarship will be disbursed among eligible students directly in their bank accounts through direct benefit transfer (DBT).

Originally, the scholarship by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms was provided to the girl child of handloom weavers up to the primary level at the rate of Rs 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 per annum for Classes I, II, III , IV, V, and VI, respectively.

There are many scholarships in India and abroad meant to encourage young talent among artists and artisans.

KamaladeviPuraskar

The Delhi Crafts Council instituted the KamaladeviPuraskar in 1986 in memory of its Patron Founder, the late Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay.

Given annually by Delhi Crafts Council (DCC), KDP is an annual scholarship award given to encourage young talent among artists in the age of 14-20 years, so they continue to practice their craft and are motivated to take it up as a means of livelihood eventually.

It is hoped that the incentive provided by this award will encourage these children to continue learning and practicing craft and also impart to them a sense of pride and dignity in their skills. The award consists of a citation along with a monthly scholarship for the period of one and a half years.

DCC works throughout the year to identify young craftsmen who are skilled in their field. It is very important to us that the younger children continue their education along with practicing their craft. More than a hundred and fifty children have benefited from these awards. Some of our awardees have also gone on to be honored as Master Craftsmen, an award given by the Government of India.

The DCC has helped to market the work of its previous awardees by inviting them back for exhibitions and connecting them with buyers in Delhi under the banner of our Navodit Shilpi program.
